St.
Andrew’s Shield
“...above all taking the Shield of
Faith ...” Ephesians 6:16

From the
Pastor’s Heart
I read that Billy Ray
Cyrus was voted off "Dancing with Stars" this week. The week
before
somebody was voted off "American Idol." And before that somebody was
voted
off the island, and before that somebody was voted out of the jungle.
The "reality
shows" we watch lead us to believe that people are expendable -- if we don't
like
what they do or how they do it, then off they go!
Our Christian faith
holds us to a different standard! Jesus says we are to exhaust
every
effort to work out your differences before you vote somebody off (loose
translation
of Matthew 18:15. Peter Steinke (in Congregational Leadership in
Anxious Times)
says:
1.
Be calm and courageous no matter what
2. Stay
differentiated (know what you believe, see how your actions affect others,
cooperate, live with purpose, and seek adventure)
3. Stay
connected
As we move into the
future with our brothers and sisters in Christ from two other
congregations
that are very different from us, Jesus' and Steinke's collective advice
are
words we would do well to live by. Let’s do it!
Learning to live together!

Southminster, St. Andrew’s and St. Giles
Exploratory Committee
Update
From April 29, 2007
Meeting
Present: Gary Griffith, Sam Haun, Carol Messer, Barbara Thomas, Ann LaMar,
Barry Weaver, Marilee Story, Bill Webb, Ken Tracy, Leslie Talbott, John
Stukey, Diana Henderson and Marianna Vesely.
Sam
opened with silent prayer.
Several people shared their “Vision” of St. Andrew’s/St. Giles/Southminster
in September of 2007 and
the necessary tasks to move toward the blending of the new relationship.
Each congregation
will ask for Session approval so we can move on to the next step.
There will be concerns, but we are confident that we will be able to work
out our differences.
We
were all excited about the blending of our churches.
The
next meeting will be at SPC on May 20, 2007 at 1:00pm
Sam
dismissed us with prayer.

Our Session voted to
affirm these people on the Exploratory Group:
Gary Griffith, Diana Henderson, Anne Spitzmiller,
Lew Sullivan, Leslie Talbott, Rob Turley, and
Robin Williams, and affirmed that they will work with the committees of the
other churches, and bring decisions back to the session for approval.

If you have to miss
worship on any given Sunday, you can find both the bulletin and the
sermon on the web. Webmaster, Emerson Parker,
adds them to our website each week, and adds The Shield on the
second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Our address is

A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM YOUR DEACONS
Your Deacons “Global Mission Team” invites everyone to
contribute to a possibly life changing experience for Presbyterian youth and
their friends and perhaps anyone “young at heart” who visits Dwight Mission.
How can we contribute? Continue reading—but first take note of some
history! Dwight Mission was founded by Presbyterians in 1820 to serve as a
mission school for Indians in what is now Oklahoma. The school operated
until 1948 when it was no longer needed. Since 1950, Dwight Mission has
served as a Presbyterian camp, conference and retreat center.
With a well deserved reputation for lending a helping
hand, St. Andrew’s was recruited to help fulfill a vision of the
then-current director. He envisioned a tranquil spot to be in communication
with God and as with many things in life the first step was to bridge the
divide (or in this case to build a bridge to cross the creek where the
prayer trail was to be located). In October of 2001, we began by building
and installing the bridge and the benches to be used as tranquil stations
along the prayer trail. The project was put on hold for a year while a new
director settled into his job. On May 5th of 2003, we completed the work
with the help of the leaders and participants of Dwight Mission’s “Leaders
In Training”.
With that background, here’s how we can all help to get
the maintenance and improvements needed to have the prayer trail ready for
the 2007 camping season. The best and most fun-filled way to contribute is
to volunteer to join our work crew on May 19th - please complete
the form below and return to the office by Sunday, May 13th. If
you are unable to join us for the fun work, the next best way to contribute
is to make a tax deductible contribution in any amount you can afford to
help cover our expenses (checks should be made payable to St. Andrew’s
Deacons Fund). We extend our thanks to all who participated in the
“Reasor’s Fund Raising Campaign” recently conducted by Mari Turley! The
$400.00 raised in that campaign along with the amount raised from this
appeal will hopefully fund all expenses of our prayer trail work and result
in a surplus
that can be used for other mission activities sponsored
by your deacons.
