St. Andrew’s Shield

“...above all taking the Shield of Faith ...”   Ephesians 6:16

Volume 52, Number 7                                                                                    April 11, 2007

From the Pastor’s Heart

My heart is still singing!  What a glorious Holy Week and Easter we experienced!  We had opportunities to walk through “the valley of the shadow of death” almost as if we had been there – from the Seder at Southminster on Wednesday, through the Maundy Thursday service here, to the Good Friday joint service at John Calvin, into the joy of  Easter morning services.

Some of the sources of our joy this Easter have included activities with members of both St. Giles and Southminster.  Little by little, step by step, we are becoming acquainted.  Not that we were strangers – many of us were already friends with one or two or three, and are discovering even greater commonalities than we previously knew.

As the future unfolded for the first disciples, they saw Jesus at work among them, bringing them comfort in their distress, telling them what they needed to do, being present with them.  We can be assured this same Jesus will be among us, too, as we work together to follow Him.

Following the Risen Christ together!

NEWS from the PEWS!

Diana Henderson just returned from 7 days in Hawaii (Kaua'i and Oahu islands) with her sister, 15 year old niece, and friend, David.  The only negative of the trip was the unrelenting restriction that there are only 24 hours in a day.  Diana got to snorkel at one of the beaches that are now sporting "beach-chairs", water-proof wheelchairs with balloon tires which can be easily pushed over the sand and into the water.  The others went scuba diving and had surfing lessons on Kaua'i and got to "swim with the dolphins" at Oahu's Sea Life Park.

Pat Smith was recently able to fulfill a lifelong dream to visit the renowned Galapagos Islands off the South American coast.  Along with 15-20 others, she was able to see many of the unique animals for which the islands are known including the Galapagos Turtles, sea lions and the only penguins found north of Antarctica.

Report of Exploratory Committee Retreat on March 31, 2007

As the congregations of Southminster, St. Giles and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Churches explore their future together, there will be periodic updates from "The Exploratory Group" made up of representatives of all three congregations.  Here are the notes from the Retreat on March 31.

Update:  St. Andrews has accepted the offer to sell their property.  Details and timeline to be worked out.  Spirit high, confident that we can seize the chance of a lifetime to create a new vision and do ministry in support of that vision.
