St. Andrew's Shield “...above all taking the Shield of Faith ..” Ephesians 6:16 Volume 51, Number 19 October 4, 2006 From the Pastor’s Heart I am truly grateful for The Focus Team we commissioned in August. It is amazing! I had intended to minimize their work load by asking them to divide up into teams and meet about every other month or so. They would have nothing to do with THAT good idea! Instead, they wanted to focus together and frequently! So they’ll be offering you opportunities to give them input from time to time in survey form. In addition, you can either e-mail your thoughts to the Team at focus AT standrewstulsa D0T org or submit them in writing to the Church Office, and placing it in the box outside the Church Office door. Whether or not you give the Focus Team your input, please keep them in your prayers. They are working to discern God’s design for this congregation, and make recommendations to the Session. They have no particular time frame – being led by God requires that we set aside our notions of “what is right” and let God take charge. Focusing together! Pastor Ann
NEWS from the PEWS! Roger & Marilyn Baumann have returned from a week of visiting family and friends in northern Illinois and attended First Presbyterian Church of Woodstock, Il. "And a one, And a two..". Number "Two" out of three pending Great-Grandchildren for Betty Weigel has arrived to Brandi & Josh Bradley. Cage William Bradley weighed 7 lb 7 oz when he was born in September. Just one more to go! Pastor Ann and Richard spent a week in Iowa recently. She went to study Natural Church Development in East Iowa Presbytery, and Richard did some genealogical research into his mother's family who settled there from Hamburg, Germany.
“MARINERS CARGO DAY” "Cargo" Day (our Fall Cleaning Day) is scheduled for Saturday morning, October 28. This time around, we will be leaving the heavy duty cleaning to the janitorial service. Keep your eyes peeled for seldom done, but necessary lighter tasks like cleaning the hymn book racks. Please report any suggestions to Judith Wilson or Diana Henderson.
VOLUNTEER ROUND-UP! St. Andrew's Partner in Education is Waite Phillips Elementary School. For the last two years we have hosted a Fall Carnival at our church for the students and their families to attend. The success of these events has been due in large part to the number of church members who volunteered time, money and other items. This year we are looking for more help to host a special performance of the musical, A Year With Frog and Toad. It is not too late to be part of this unique offering, again volunteering time, money and other items needed. Please contact Kathy Call or any member of the Program Team to sign up for your "FROG JOB" or "TOAD TASK" now.
W A R N I N G! There is about to be a mass clean-out of storage areas in the Church housing items - furniture, machines, etc. - that are no longer usable or being used. If you know of anything that might be mistaken as belonging in one of these categories you are encouraged to move, label, or otherwise protect from this effort to reclaim our closets!
If you have to miss worship on any given Sunday, you can find both the bulletin and the sermon on the web. Webmaster, Emerson Parker, adds them to our website each week, and adds The Shield on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Our address is www.standrewstulsa.org
The October Pancake Breakfast will be held Saturday, October 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Cost is $3.00.
THE REVELATION TO JOHN The Book of the Revelation to John has stirred much interest and lots of speculation through the years. In our own day, many speculators are looking to that Book for predictions about what could happen in the volatile Middle East. But does the Revelation contain predictions of the "end of the world?" Or is it a promise of God's faithfulness? Come explore this fascinating Book with us! We meet from 4 to 5 every Sunday in October in Fellowship Hall.
WE NEED TREES, PLEASE!
Don't forget that the Program Team is looking for an old, any size, Christmas tree for our Advent Season observation this year. If you have one or more, please contact Dan Call for help getting it to the church.
Helping "The Least of These" Special thanks to Larry and Anna Mark, Lee and Joyce Pauli for helping serve at the Homeless Shelter in September.
Sanctuary Choir Rehearsals are now including the special music that will be presented during the holidays. All interested in being part of the music ministry of St. Andrew's are invited to come Wednesdays at 7:00 pm and help us "make a joyful noise".
PRESBYTERIAN CURSILLO Presbyterian Cursillo is a three-day faith renewal event designed to foster and support an individual's long-term commitment to living the Christian life. Led by lay members and clergy of the Presbyterian Church USA, its sole purpose is to inspire, challenge and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, congregations, and communities. "Cursillo" is a Spanish word which means a short course in living the Christian faith. The next Cursillo weekend will be at Dwight Mission October 26-29. Brochures are available in the Narthex.
