BRINGING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST INTO THIS ROOM

*CALL TO WORSHIP

ALL:  (Hymn 138, verse 1)  Holy, holy, holy!  Lord God Almighty!  Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!  God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

ONE:  Let us listen and hear God’s teachings; let us apply our minds to the Word of the Lord.

ALL:  Life will go better for all of us if we keep God’s Words within us.

ONE:  God has made them known to us, and they are trustworthy.

ALL:  Let us turn our full attention to God, who made us all.                          (From Proverbs 2)

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON

O God, Giver of mercy, we know we speak when we should listen, and we hesitate when we should act.  Anger prevents us from doing what is right; selfishness inhibits our responding in faith.  When we are called to boldly speak Your Word, our shouts turn into whispers.  Forgive us, we pray.  Embolden us to proclaim the Good News that sets us free, in Jesus’ name.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (from A Brief Statement of Faith, 1991)

In life and in death we belong to God.  Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.  We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God, [who] proclaimed the reign of God.  We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father.  In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image.  We trust in the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.  With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
