SERVICE OF THE LIGHT

In the Darkness

Greeting and Introduction

Prayer

Lighting of the Candle

Hymn           “O God, Our Help in Ages Past

O God, our Help in ages past, our Hope for years to come

Our Shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal Home!

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,

From everlasting Thou are God, to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.

O God, Our Help in ages past, our Hope for years to come,

Be Thou our Guard while life shall last, and our eternal Home.

Introduction

Declaration of Repentance and Commitment

Do you renounce all evil powers in the world which defy God’s love?

      I do

Do you renounce the ways of sin that separate you from the love of God?

      I do

Will you try to be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love, to your life’s end?

      I will, with God’s help.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus the Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

      Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

He descended to the dead.  On the third day He rose again,

He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.  Amen

Prayer

Eternal God, when nothing existed but chaos, You swept across the dark waters and brought forth light.  In the days of Noah You saved those on the ark through water.  After the flood you set a rainbow in the clouds; when you saw your people as slaves in Egypt , You led them to freedom though the waters of the sea.

Sing to the Lord all the earth

Tell of his mercy each day.

In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the waters of his mother’s womb.  He was baptized by John in the waters of the Jordan River .  He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection, and sent them out to make disciples of all people.

Declare his works to the nations,

           His glory among all people

By the power of Your Holy Spirit, bless this gift of water and those who are renewed by it.  Wash away the sin of us all and clothe us in righteousness as those who have died and been raised with Christ.

All praise to you, Eternal God

           Through Your Son, Jesus Christ,

Who with You and the Holy Spirit

           Lives and reigns forever.  Amen.

Remember your baptism, and be glad!
