ST. ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

WE WELCOME YOU TO OUR SERVICE OF WORSHIP THIS MORNING

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church lives to celebrate God’s love through worship, seek God’s truth through education, and share God’s gifts through mission and fellowship. We encourage you to join us in the Fellowship Hall for a time of coffee, cookies and fellowship following the morning service. All who profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are welcome to join St. Andrew's. If you have no church home, we invite you to consider uniting with us as we seek to faithfully serve our Lord.  Speak to an usher or the Pastor at the close of the service to learn more.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

3rd Sunday of Lent

March 19, 2006                                                                                        10:00 a.m.

*Those able may stand

GREETINGS, CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH AND REGISTRY OF ATTENDANCE

PRELUDE                          “Madrigal”                                               Korg-Elert

BRINGING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST INTO THIS ROOM

*CALL TO WORSHIP

ALL:  (Hymn 302, verse 2) I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, But they would not dance and they would not follow Me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; They came with Me and the dance went on.  Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said He, And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I’ll lead you all in the dance, said He.

ONE:  Let us open our lips to praise God!

ALL:  We need for God to purge us so we will be clean; to wash us, so we shall be whiter than snow.

ONE:  The sacrifice acceptable to God is a subdued spirit; a tamed and penitent heart God will not despise.

ALL:  We need for God to restore the joy of our salvation, and sustain us with a willing spirit!  Let us look to God for what we need!

*HYMN  138           “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!”

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON

O God of forgiveness, we pray for new life as we remember our old ways.  When Christ calls us to follow, we want to set our own conditions.  We applaud commitment, but treasure our own comfort.  Forgive our reluctance to walk in Jesus’ steps!  Turn us away from ourselves; restore to us the joy of our salvation in Christ.

*SILENT PRAYER

*ASSURANCE OF GOD’S PARDON

*GLORIA PATRI (Hymn 579)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.  World without end! Amen, Amen.

*HYMN  556   “The World Abounds with God’s Free Grace” (verses 1 & 4)

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (From The Confession of 1967)

The reconciling act of God in Jesus Christ exposes the evil in people as sin in the sight of God.  In sin, people claim mastery of their own lives, turn against God and other people, and become exploiters and despoilers of the world.  They lose their humanity in futile striving and are left in rebellion, despair, and isolation.  All people fall under God’s judgment.  In love, God took on himself judgment and shameful death in Jesus Christ, to bring everyone to repentance and new life.  (9.12-9.14)
