BRINGING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST INTO THIS ROOM

*CALL TO WORSHIP

ALL:  (Hymn 40, verse 1)  Joy to the World! the Lord is come: Let earth receive her King: Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and heaven and nature sing.

ONE:  God speaks, and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

ALL:  God does not keep silent before us.  Let the heavens declare God’s righteousness.

ONE: God said, “Gather to Me My faithful ones, all you who have made a covenant with Me.”

ALL:  We bring our sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving as we come.  Let us turn our full attention to God!                                (From Psalm 50)

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God of compassion, have mercy upon us!  In Christ You bring light, yet we would rather live in darkness.  Your Word offers us guidance, but too often we ignore Your counsel.  You promise renewal, but we don’t always heed Your wisdom.  Speak to us again from beyond the clouds of our sinfulness; dazzle us with the light of Christ’s love.  Restore us and forgive us!

In life and in death we belong to God.  Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel , whom alone we worship and serve.  We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God, [who] proclaimed the reign of God.  We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father.  In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image.  We trust in the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.  With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
